A visit to the Old Town of Chania is an essential experience for the traveler in Crete. The old town is the first part of the city of Chania that was created and surrounds the Venetian Port.
With its narrow, winding streets and different architectural rhythms, Venetian, Ottoman and Jewish, the Old Town of Chania is a place of striking contrasts, but also of extraordinary harmony.
The harbor is protected by the Venetian breakwater, in the center of which are the ruins of a fortress. A trademark of the port is the famous Venetian Lighthouse, which you can reach on foot by taking a long walk and with the basic condition that the weather is good and you won’t get wet by the waves! On the eastern and southern sides of the port are preserved the Neoria (shipyards) built by the Venetians at the end of the 15th century. Here the Great Arsenal stands out, which, restored today, houses the exhibition and conference space of the Center for Mediterranean Architecture. And on the northwest side you will find remarkable buildings of Venetian and Ottoman architecture.
