On the northwest side of the port of the city of Chania, the Venetians built the Revellino del Porto, a fortification capable of preventing any enemy danger to the port. Its construction began around the middle of the 16th century. and was completed a few years before the fall of the city to the Turks in 1645.
Internally, the space was configured with suitable buildings for barracks and warehouses of war material. It was also the seat of the city’s military commander. In about the middle of the courtyard there is a large vaulted tank that collected the rainwater from the roofs.
The north side of the castle is occupied by the complex of six continuous domes in which there were the large cannon ports, one in each dome, designed so that the cannon fire could cover the entrance to the port.
